H.M.S. CALLIOPE.

REPORTS REGARDING HER CONDITION.

This " Sydney Morning Herald " of Maroh 13bh says: A cable from Auckland yesterday is to the effect that bhe man-of-war, H.M.s. Calliope, which took bhe place at Samoa of H. M. s. Royalisb, will bo relieved early next monbh by H.M.s. Rapid. This news ia looked upon wibh surprise here. It was supposed that the Calliope had relieved the Royalisb with a view to remaining on the Samoan station for some time. The removal of the Calliope, however, has given rise to a renewal of the re-, ports which found their way home after she was lasb docked here. These, ib may bo remembered, were to tbe effect that many of the bolts which secure the wooden sheathing to the steel ship were found to be more than half eaten through by galvanic action, the water having got in between the sheathing somewhere, making a kind of "cell" between the copper on the bottom and tbe iron bolts inside. It is now surmised that the Calliope will undergo another docking at Auckland while the Admiral is bhere, for bhe reporbs which have been senb home are said to state that bobh the Admiral and the captain were anxious about the condition of the vessel's hull."

With reference to tbe above remarks, we understand that the Rapid is to joinfiho Calliope at Samoa, not relieve her.
