WHANGAREI.
(FItOM OUB OWN COBKESPONDJNT.)
Messrs Mcllaboxd and McKisosr, the assessors appointed for the new faluations under the property tax, are busilj engaged in their duties, and are making [sweeping reductions. In some cases properties are put down at cms-third of their forme r value, upon which we have been paying for the last three years, and when it is understood that the rates for County Road Board and Town Board purposes were jsbrnok on the same valuation, and that generally there is a County and Road Board rate, or a County and a Town Board rate struck every year 5 it will be seen the taxpayers have found something to do with their spare cash ; but everything has an end, and the third year has come. The Bank of New Zealand are about to change their local agent or manager, Mr W. A. Bain, who has bean here for many years, and is very much respected by the whole of the community. It is not known who is to succeed Mr Bain, but ib will be long before we see his like again. We wish hia good lady, their family mid himself good luck.
AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY'S SHOW. The Agricultural Show, held in the Kensington Park grounds on the 14th insb., must be considered a success. There was a large gathering of people, well dressed and happy, showingno sign of bad times. Mostof them had splendid mounts, and all sorts of vehicles were used by the colonial farmers. The young people were all natives of the colony, and ib was a hopeful sight to see so many of them in such robust health. The show of horses was very large and they were in splendid condition, but ib gave one the idea that they had hardly enough to do, and that we are still overhorsed. A working horse, it should be kept in mind, is supposed to work every day that man works. The cows were very few in comparison to the number that are in the district, bufc there were some good ones. The sheep were creditable, and so were the pigs. Poultry there was a great variety of—some from Auckland. The produce was well represented. The show of farming implements was poor in comparison with former years' exhibits.
