London, January s,—Mr Gladstone has written a letter to Sir William Vernon flarceurt, in reply to a request that he ehould attend a mooting of Liberal leaders lo disCUS3 the liifh question, ia which ho states tbat bo hopes tho speech delivered by Mr Chauibailain in December last may lead to tho discovery of a modus Vivendi among tho f.iberais, which favoured a di--ci.irs.ori of tho points of difference, with v viow lo arranging the action to be taken in Parliament. Mr (.ladstorto adds that whilst approving of the proposed conference, he abstains from taking part in the same. It is announced that tho Conference will be held on the 13th instant, and will comprise Mr Chamberlain, Mr John Morley, Sir George Trevolyan, Sir W. Vernon liarcourt, and Lord IJersebell.
