Cambridge.
Cambridge, this day,
The mooting of householders last night at the Public Hall to elect a school committee was well attended ; the Hew H. B. Dewsbury in the chair. Mr Sargent, Chairman of tho outgoing Committee, read the annual report, which has already been published. Mr Wells referred at length to the progress which tho schools had made during the year under the management of tho Committee, and particularly under the personal supervision of the Head-master, Mr Stewart. As an instance of the growing prosperity of the schools, ho quoted the fact that that morn ing no less than 20 new pupils had been enrolled, four of which entered the High School. The ropoi t as read was adopted. Mr Well's then proposed tho following Committee:— Messrs Sergeant Houghton, Hcslting, Dickonson, Webber, Hewitt, and Gilbert, In doing sa fee made a few remarks on the qualification' of. the candidates and growing importance of the High School. Ho spoke of the valuable services of tho late Chairman, to whom he attributed a great measure of the success that has attended thG working of the school for tho past twelve months, and trusted they would now return him at the head of the poll. He further referred to the proposal of the " Herald' and " Times to establish a Central High School in Hamilton, which he ridiculed as something too good to be entertained by the settlers in this part of tho country. The Hamilton High School was on its last legs, and the proposal referred to was a mere spasmodic effort to roanimateitintoanewaxistence. He compared this with the nourishing condition of the Cambridge High School under Mr Stewart. Largo centres of population were now springing np in the vicinity of Lichfield, Oxford, etc., for which Cambridge was the centre. No other candidates being pro* poeod, those named were deolared elected. Mr Surgant was |re-appointed Chairman at a subsequent meeting of the Committee.
