CORRESPONDENCE.

Deputy Harbour-master Fisher,

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —" Granny "is at fault ogam ye the above gentleman in her morning's issue of this day. Captain Fishor •-- .< ■■ i" Mauritius, hating arrivetl w . ■>.: ■.., tho 3rd inst. from there, after o. rapid passage of 26 days. For the information of "Granny" and those interested in the matter, I would state that Captain Fisher is a thoroughly competent man, having commanded vessels of different sizes for many years past ; and though hailing from Hobart, is almost an Aucklander, having been here nearly every two months for some eight or nine jeirs. His wife's friends are Auckland people. lam informed that Captain Fisher only lost the Chief Harbourship of Hobart, from amongst some fourteen applicants, by the casting vote of the Chairman, some two yeara ago, thus showing that he was considered competent enough there. As to his knowing of the vacancy, that is simple enough. Captain Fisher has many friends here, and as he had expressed a wish to come to reside on shore amongst us, ho arranged that at any time any such vacancy should occur to be wired to on the subject, which was done by one of his friends, and he then applied direct to tho Harbour Board office by wire for the position ; and I am informed the Chairman gave his casting vote solely because he deemed him to bo the best man for the post, though he had several other personal friends amongst the applicants.— I am, &c,

Fair Puy
