The Tonquin Difficulty.—China Firm and Franco Bellicose. LONDON, September 24. Rumours are current here that the Chinese Ambassador, the Maixruis Tseng, has assumed an unyielding position in his negotiations with the French Government for the cessation of hostilities in Tonquin, and evinces no desire to arrive at an amicable settlement of the difficulty. The French Press strongly denounces the arrogance and pretensions of the Celestial Government, and urges further reinforcements tor the French force in Tonquin, and the prosecution of the war with full vigour.

Chiefs Sentenced to Death.
Cape Town, September 24,
Intelligence has been received from the Transvaal that the native chiefs, Mapoch and Mampoer, the leaders of the rebellion against the Boers in the early part of this year, and who were subsequently] made prisoners, have been tried at Pretoria and sentenced to death.
Steamer for Australia in Danger.
Loxiiox, September 22.
News has been received hero that the steamship Sorrento, while outward bound for Adelaide, sprung a leak, and was compelled to throw a large amount of cargo overboard.

Mr Edgar Vincent, who has been offered the post of Financial Adviser to the Khedive, has accepted the position.

London, September 24 Equalisation of Franchise.
A public meeting, attended by upwards of 50,000 persons, was held at Newcastle on Saturday, at which resolutions were carried advocating the assimilation of the county and borough franchise. The Farnellitcs and the Land Act. At a meeting of Mr Parnell's supporters at Follow, County of Carlow, speeches were made favouring an amendment being made in the Land Act. A section of the Press is urging that steps should be taken towards repressing the National Land League.
