London, Septomber 4. Chinese Troops in Annam.
The latest intelligence from Annam is that the 15,000 Chinese troops who were recently reported as having crossed the frontier aro now advancing on Haipong on the French garrison in Annam. The Lady Joeelyn in a Storm. During the gale which prevailed along the South Coast of England on Sunday and Monday, the iron ship Lady Joeelyn, trading between London nnd New Zealand, suffered considerable damage. She has put into Spithcnd for repairs. France and the New Hebrides. The " National Political Journal," published at Paris, expresses the hope that the French war vesselsßruatandtheD'Estrecs, which sailed from Noumea recently for New Hebrides, will prevent Australia from annexing those islands. The Snpposod Land League Poisoning. An investigation lias been made into the poisoning of a number of labourers who were working in a field at New Ross, County Wexford. It now appears probable that tho poisoning was the result of an accident. Tho French Government and tho Madagascar Outragos. The Marquis of Hartingdon has expressed his opinion that Franco has not satisfactorily explained the action of Admiral Pierre in detaining the captain and otlicers of the English war vessel Dryad at Tamatavo. He thinks that a further and fuller explanation should be insisted upon. Tho English Hop Crop a Failure. The severe weather which recently prevailed in England has destroyed one-third of tho hop crops. Reforms in Roumania. London, September 9, Tho Government of Russia has decided on a series of reforms to be introduced into Roumania. The Crusado Against tho Falso Prophet. General Hicks, leader of the forces who have for some time past beon engaged in the campaign against El Mahdi, the false prophet of the Soudan, is now advancing his troops with a view to recapturing El Obed, the capital town of Kordofan, in Central Africa. Alarm of English in China. The anti-European feeling which recently manifested itself amongst the Chinese residents in Canton i.s rapidly spreading to other towns of China. At Hong Kong tho Chinese have assumed a menacing attitude towards Europeans, and the situation is so alarming that a complete panic prevails in that town. Englishmen in Hong Kong are loud in their expression of indignation at the absence of the British squadron, as they consider the presence of war vessels essential to their protection. I
