Australian Footballers arrive Next Week.
Some surprlso was caused in football circles to-tlay by a telegram from Mr Arthur J. Bate, Secretary o£ the Wellinßtou Ituitby Union, stating that tlio Sydney team will leave tho other side for Auckland tomorrow. The message further requested that intelligence should bo sent immediately stating tho Auckland programme, and presuming that the local men could arrango two matches. Astonishment is freoly expressed at tho manlier in which Auckland has been treated in theso arraiißomcnts. Nothing had beon heard concerning the visit elnco July 11th and- it was geneeally faoUovcd horo that tho trip had beon abandoned. It would therefore appear that tho Wellington union havo sinco been in chmimmication with tho visitors, and tho faot that thoy have Riven tho local men such short notice at least implios a want of cmirtosy. Tho Sydney men will arrive here on tho sth proximo, in tho s.s. Hotomahana, and tho match will poobably take place on tho Oth. There is now scarcely suflloient timo at tho disposal of tho Auckland klckists to get toKethor a team, but not a moniont will bo lost. A mooting is convened for this evening to tsiko tho inattsr of arrangements into consideration, und it is ilosirsblo that thoro should bo a largo attendance of thoao interested.
Iv accorduncc with a resolution passed by the City Council last night, tho Town ClerK to day wrote to tho Chairman of the Ponsonby Highway Board for an account of its indebtedness, a statement of its finance, a plan of works, list of streets, sketch oi tin; draiuago system, and similar details.
