COX'S CHEEK BRIDGE.

(To the Editor.)

Silt, Knowing that you are ever ready to oppose jobbery and corrupt dealings in high plucc., and to advocate the cuuso of those who are being wronged, I take the liberty of drawing your attentiou to the proposed new bridge across Cox's Creek, aud will have little difficulty iv proving that it is one of the mo. t glaring jobs that has come before the public for some time. The total cost of the work has been variously e.timated at £3500 to £5500, which would probably be under the mark. Now, sir, supposing this job was completed, let us see whore it leads to having lowered ourselves down Ironi the heights above a distance of over ouc hundred feet, we croas over to tho other side. It has boen said that there is but one step from the sublime to the ridiculous, but hero is a greater c.ntrast. On one side we left the beautiful gardens of Mr Mason, and on the other side we find tho night-aoil |dep6t for the city of Auckland. On crossing this depflt, some 30 or 40 acres in exteut, we are brought to a doad stop by another large creek knowu as Motion's Creek. Imogine au outlay of five or six thousand pouuds of the public money at the present time to brook this tonnage of land on to Ponson by, and so increase its value. There has been an attempt to throw dust in the eyes of the Ponsonby ratepayers by persuading them that this bridge was just the thing required to connect them with the Croat North Road, when a glauce at its geographical position will show that the money would be literally thrown into the sea, and would benefit none but two or three landowners on the point, That a bridge is wanted no one will deny, but in the name of common sense lot it be placed where it will be a real benefit to both district", and cost about one-eighth of the one in contemplation, which, if completed, will be the means of shutting in the township of Richmond, and depriving the residents of their valuable waterfrontage, thero being something like nine feet of water in the Channel, at ordinary tides, to the head of the creek. Hoping that you will publish this on behalf of a large number of residents.—l remain yours &c, Ratepayer.
