PEACE ASKED TO RESIGN.
It is stated that tho Government have called upon all insolveut Justice of the Peace to resign.
RAILWAY STRIKE COLLAPSED.
The telegrams from the officers represent that the Southern railway strike has practically collapsed. The men aro understood to be willing to accept a revised scale of wages, subject to slight modifications in special cases, which the Government aro willing to consider wheu the threat of strike is withdrawn. On Saturday evouing a cabman, named Vow, was arrested for drunkenness nnd cruelty to a horso. He resisted tho constable when putting him iv tho lock-up, aud fell heavily, breaking ono leg,
Tho revised scalo of wages for the railwuy employes was circulated on Saturday* Tho Committoo held it meeting in tho ovening, and discussed tho scale for upwards fivo hours. Tho sub-committee reported that they had waited ou tho hoad of tho dopartment, who considered tho now scalo on the wholo a fair one, excepting ns referring to labourers, and ho stated that a strika would not cause serious inconvenience to the authorities as plenty of skilled labour was available. During tho meeting several cases of seeming injustice of tho now scale wero mentioned. It was ultimately resolved to defer any action till after the mass mooting to bo held in Dunedin this evening.
