Singular Subsidence of Earth.
(BY TELEGRAPH.) GRAHAMSTOWN, this day. * A SINGULAR subsidence took place on the Walo-Karaka Flat early litis morning. About 3.30 the residents were awakened by aloud crash, resembling the firing of a pack of attillerv.' On investigation it was found that the hoise proceeded from the workings in the upper level of the Piako mine, which bad subsided, and carried with them the wiuding-engine and spindles to adepthol SO feet. The foundations of the enginehouse were disturbed and the buildiDg lost its equilibrium, and is now a complete wreck. A section of the tramway from the mine to the battery has been carried away; The supports were wrenched clean out of the ground, < and are now lying at the side of an immensa cavity. The pumping machinery is not yet affected, but it is feared that it will iollow the winding engine. The cause is supposed to be the water, which has been rising in the shaft some time, washing away the foundation. A gang of men are employed to fill up th<s cavity, ;
