THE WAIKATO ELECTION.
(To the Editor). Sir,— The detractors of Sir George Grey seem to make a great fuss about the opening of the Thames-Waikato railway from Shortland I would like to toy the following facts before the electors of Auckland: They say it was very wrong of Sir George Grey to start it first from the Thames. I have no hesitation in saying it was a wise and just act in this wise, viz., the amount of labour in the Waikato last year at the time of the etartin" of the Thames line was very scarce "whereas the Thames was in a state of starvation, therefore the act was both sracious, merciful, and just. It gave a means of employment to men of families, who could not procure a living at the time, and who could not incur the expense of going to Hamilton. It was also a means of allowing contractors to fulfil their engage-ment-s which would have beg» impossible if two lines were at work. Now, Why are some would-be member, so locked at this injustice to the Waikato? Is it for the sake of poor Hamilton? No. I say most emphatically W> i l^ttota* fit* derived from its opening at the said town to them-the land ring-* WMT that would be worse than the Lake Erie ring, of America, if they can have their way. How does tMs line run from tho Waikato ? I »3s»?^4*__vfi vsa2sss_^2£s bridge across the Waikato, whereas the one at present connecting wmW have answered Loth purposes, and wonld also have brought this line direct through Hamilton But Mi J. B. Wliyto is a large land holder ami employs one man annually. line then takes a nice li «le turn to fertilize about 200 acres of Mr »teele s land a principal in the Wajkflto oi Piako Lnnd Company, then at au /MJguof about 44 degrees, with acurve.it riiDS*uro the great Piako Swamp ltoad, which roao. runs direct to Hamilton, but a route which, if the line took, would fertilize none ot tiie ring estates for eight miles. It then continuesits course through tho P.S. Company s Empire, when it throws its nourishing steam over a Mr .lonian's land, a {southern j.-entleman next Mr Morrin'B, and so on to the Piako Kiver, where a. disinterested (.') clan \yould have it stop. If started ftt once their hind was up iv price at once, am would bo sold before any exposure Wits made. Look to^yourselvcs. V tlzeS s w fellow toilers beware.-I am, &c, E. W. Birmingham.
