MR SEYMOUR THORNE GEORGE AT MATAKANA.
Mr George addressed the electors of this districton on Wednesday afternoon last, Mr Alex. Carrie being in the clmir. Mr Gporga commenced br stating his reasons for coming forward for lodney, and then wont on to explain the causes which broueht about the recent, dissolution. After rebutting a i\amber o' charges made against the Government. Mr George gave the following reasons why they should be supported :—M. They brougln"in the Land Tax Act, which fell upon men in the with largo run*, who-o vaiue was enormously increased br i übl c Works policy. 2nd. Tuey rortuced the tax on tho necessaries ot life—tea, sugar, nrai<\ and other things. He was in favour of abolishing altogether tho tax on tea nnd sugar when the finances would allow them to do so. 3rd. The Klectoral Bill and the Maorinnal vote werosimplrmadeaetalklng horse by the Opposition. The bill was carnea in 187S, and no [ones voted against jt. 'I htj Upper llouso alone had dj»countenanced it The candidate then proceeded to indicate tho policy to bo puranod j n the future, and wouid up his address by stating his views in regard to the principal questions now agitating tho public mind. Having answered a number of questions satisfactorily, Mr Georae resumed his seat. On tha motion of l)r Croickshank, seconded by Mr Richards, a rote of thanks and confidence was unanimously passed to the candidata.
