CAPTAIN COLBECK AT WAIPU.
Captain Colbeck uddrcsssd a crowded meeting of thee cctors of Waipu on Wednesday last, Mr H. Rowlands presided. Mr DDfam- made a preliminary appeal to the people of Waipu to strengthen tha hands of tfir George Grey in the ensuing Parliamentary Blrug^lt by returning the man who was pledged to support him—and who had been sekcted l>y the Government party—th« gentleman who was to address them that evening. Cap'ain Colbeek began his speech by referring to his recent journey to Wellington in tha interests c£ the North. tie averred that personal vanity or ambition had no share in his candidature, but simply a desire to further the neglected interests of the large and important district in which he lived. The speaker then proceeded to enumerate and treat upon thu measures which ho would support, viz.: Xeiliatribution of seats on the basis of population, manhood suffrafre with the residential qualification, Triennial Parliaments, Income Tax, and abolition of duties ei\ the necessaries of life, settlement, undor tho Homestead Ac, tne appointment of a commission to investigate Native nli ims against the Government, free trade in land, secular education, and one Auciland party and Sir George Grey as their leader. After a number of questions had been put to Captain Colhock and answe.ei.the following resolutions werfi passed :—
Proposed by Mr A. McKay, and seconded by Captain Jacob. "Thit this meeting, having heard Cm tain Colbeck, i=< well plcisrd with ha address, anil highly approves of what ho has said." Carried.
Proposed by Mr M. W. MeKonzie, seconded by Captiin Jacob, and carried, "That this meeting has full confidence in Captain Colbeck, but does not at present pledge itself to vote for him." A vote of thanks, on the motion of Mr Dufaur, seconded by Mr 11. McKenxio, was passed to the chairman Mr A. J. Mcl Cay proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Dufiiurfor his able advocacy of Sir George Grey, wh'ch was carried iiy acclamation. Threu hesrly cheers were Riven by the electors for Sir Georga Grey at tha conclusion of tho meeting.
