WELLINGTON, this day. MR JAMES MACKAY AND COLONEL
READER.
The cause of the dispute between Colonel Reader and Mr James Mackay appears to be this : Mr Mackay has beeu in the habit of relaxing the prison regulations of Maoris at Mount Cook Gaol upon his own authority to the extent not approved of by Colonel Reader and Mr Woodward. Colonel Header, as head of the Armed Constabulary, who is prftctically responsible for the charge of the prisoners, considered it his duty to interfere with the line of action pursued by Mr Mackay, who prevented the prisoners being locked up at night, and had taken them out for exercise outside the precincts of the gaol. Colonel Reader insisted that, as he was the person directly responsible, they must obey his orders, in which he was supported by 'Ministers. STEAM COMMUNICATION WITH ENGLAND. Cable advices state that the Chimborazo sailed from Plymouth for tho Australian Colonies on the 14th August full of passengers. The City of London is advertised to sail from Sydney on the 12th, and from Melbourne on the 20th September. STABBING.
