ACCIDENT BY A SAUSAGE MACHINE.
The details of an accident which occurred in Newton more than a week ago, have only just been related to us, and though, fortunately it docs not involve serious consequences, yet it is of such a singular description that it is worth recording1. Mrs Tucker, the wife of Mr Tucker, butcher, of Karangahape Road, was engaged feeding a sausage machine which another person was employed, in turning, when suddenly her hair, ■ which she wore in plaits, caught in the wheel"-, and was drawn in between the rollers. Before she had time even to call out, her head was forcibly drawn against the cogs, which bruised her forehead frightfully, and tore out a good deal of her hair. The assistant was looking the other way at the time, and did not observe the accident, till she felt the extra exertion required in turning. Mrs Tucker, besides carrying a scar on her forehead' has her eyes still darkened by the rough usage of the machine and we regret to hear that some unkind poisons have been assiduous in assigning Mr Tucker as the cause, thereby heaping up for that respectable tradesman a large amount of undeserved abuse.
The soiree to welcome the Rev Mr Monro, to his charge at St Luke.-;, Remuera, will take place this evening. Crowthcr's busses leave the., P-ost-office, Shortland-strcet, at every lictlp^ittr up to .seven o'clock, and "will be available for visitors from town, who can return by the same means of conveyance. A visitor to the house of Mrs "Welsh, the ■widow, whose case was drawn attention to by a correspondent in last evening's issue, informs us that he found the family in great destitution. The widow and two children had supsisted chiefly on a pumpkin and Ccibbage, without bread, for two days. Mr J. King', who at once relieved the pressing necessities of the familvfrom his own purse, has undertaken to collect a, few subscriptions on her behalf. We would draw the attention of the Relieving Officer to the ea^e. It c irtainly stems as much entitled to relief a^ many in which the rations are allowed. :"' M'K^ Remnants of Carpets at a Sacifice RIiMNAXTS of Floor Cloth at a Sacrifice REMNANTS of Dress Goods at ii Sacrifice Housekeepers have now a rare chance of procuring- short lengths of Brnsscl and Tapestry carpets and Floor Cloths low.
