No one will accuse us of unduly flattering the General Government, but for what they are doing about the Coromandel peninsula, Heaven bless them. We know that the assertion of the Government pre-emptive right has been a very bomb-elicU ia the camp

of the land-sharking community, and we are glad to Bee by our telegrams to-day that Mr Mackay defends the action on high grounds, taking his stand on the Treaty o£ Waitangi. Bufc whether or not it can be defended, in the n&.me of all that is right and for tho public good, we congratulate the country on the reserving of that golden land from the claws of the harpies. Of course it is possible that the Government may turn this right to wrong uses, and play as is alleged into the hands of friends. Goodness knows the Government is capable enough of that, and worse. But with all their faults, which are many, we trust them in their professions of acquiring estate for the public use, rather than the bloodsuckers who only look (o their own self-interests and laugh at those who talk "public utility business" as fools.
