VESSELS IN HARBOUR.

Ships: Miltiades, Queen of Nations, Countess of Kittore. Barques : James Wisha^t, £lm Grove, Ilytfon Castle, Novelty, William Gilford, Briton. Brigs: -Albion, Syr-n, Thomas and Henry, Susatiine. Transport, Fawn. Schooners : Flirt,PaDua, Juliu3 Vogel, Belle Brandon. Edith, Ivanhoe. Mat;el!an Cloud, Emu, Queen, Lfolitia, Golden Isle, Effle Meikle, Saucy Lass.

The weather during the_ last forty-eight hours has been very unpropitious. A strong gale which has veered from the N.E. tonearly West has been blowing, accompanied^ by violent ram squalls and frequent electrio discharges. This state of the elements has prevented the departure of several vessels •which are ordy waiting a favorable slant to spread their wings and fly away. Among these are the biigs Transport and Syrtn. the barque Elm. Grove ond the schooners Saucy Laps and Edith. The Lone 7on-bound barque Hylton Castle will also be added to the list of vessels ready to sail this evening. Owing to the precautions taken by the Harbour Masters Captain Ellis and MiLanders, we are happy to have to record no damage to the shipping, during the blow. Business on the warf has been put a complete slop to, during to day. The bri,er.ir;'ne Eyno is at present loading at Peloris Sound for Lyttelton.

The schooner Lfttitia has been sold to a Lyttelton firm. She will shortly take her departure for her now place of ownership. It is satisfactory to learn that the trade on .the West Coast of this island is steadily on the increase. Although the s.s. Go-ahead left the Maimkan for Wanganni only a day before the St. Kilda, the latter vessel had nearly as much cargo aa she could carry. We understand that the cargo now carried to tho Waitara and Wanganui has nearly doubled during the last six months. The schooner Golden Isle brings 110 tons coal from Knssell. She arrived during the night, having had a stormy passage from the Bay of Islands. The schooner Lcotitia brifigs 2 tons beef, 27 sacks maize, and 4 pigs from Napier via ihe coast. The sohooner Queen brings 72 tons coal from Russell.

The schooner Bonita has oleared in ballast for Matakana.

The cutter Maud brings 20,000 feet timber from Mercury Bay. The schooner Helen brings 13,000 f feet timber, 25 tons firewood and 10,000 shingles from Ngungnru. The A S. P. Co.'s s.s. Southren Cross todved yesterday from the Thames in ballast, She is to sail on Tuesday 4th inst. for Gisberpe and Napier. The Cyphrenes (mail steamer) and the Pretty Jane had not made their appearance np to th 9 time of our going to press. Even a powerful steamer like the Cyphrenes > which left Napier on Saturday afternoon would make but slow progress against the gale. The Pretty Jane has probably put into Hicks' Bay for Bhelter. The following coasters cleared out to*day : Ocean, schooner, for Whitiangi, with stores; • Wanderer, cutter, for Tairua, in ballast; Coralie, cutter, for Tairua, with 1 ton flour, 1 ton potatoes, and 6 bags maize ; Onward, schooner, for Tairna, with some sundries shipped by Preece, Howard and Co. ; Petrel, Cutter, in ballast, for Coromandel.
