! ■ The prisoner, 'who appeared in a lamentable condition, pleaded guilty to the fojir charges of larceny, and said he was induced to steal the articles through distress ; he had been ill, and was out of employment. His Worship : Well, but why sacrifice your character ? Why did you not throw yourself upon the protection of the police, and something would have been done for you ? We have charitable institutions, and the people of Auckland are most charitably disposed, so there can be no necessity for persons in reduced circumstances to pursue a dishonest course.
Sergeant-Major ..Pardy asked that the prisoner might be remanded until to-morrow, as he had only been charged with the offences this inorning; and there had, npt been sufficient time to summon the witnesses, to attend.
His Worship : "I think, if possible, the cases should be gone into at once."
Sergeant-Major Pardy said he would rather the case be remanded until tomorrow for the sake of the prisoner.
His Worship, "Well, if it be for his benefit, let the case stand over until tomorrow."
This was all the ordinary business.
