AKAROA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Akaroa County Counoil was held at Duvauobelle on Saturday last. Present— Messrs J. R. Thacker, F. W. Wil Hams, C B. Tbaoker, T Conway and E. Hay.

In tbe absence of tbe chairman. Mr J. D. Bruce, owing to ill health, Mr J R Thacker was voted to the chair.

Mr J F Buchanan, of Little River, wrote acknowledging tbe Council's letter of sympathy in tbe loss of bis brother, tbe late Mr H D Buobanan.

The North Canterbury Recruiting Board wrote as follows : —

"With a view of launching tbe Government's recruiting scheme in' tbe country districts, I have been instructed by the above Board to ask if your Council oould appoint a representative to attend a conference to take place in Ohristobnrcb on Wed nesday, tbe 29th March, at 3 p.m., at tbe City Council Chambers."

Mr C Thaoker moved that Mr Hay be the Council's representative

Seconded by Mr Williams and carried.

Mr S. Birdling wrote asking the Council to sell bim some screenings.

It was decided to inform Mr Bird tbat tbe Counoil would not sell any screenings, foreman's report. The foreman reported as follows : — - inoe last meeting we have finished filling tbe big culvert at the baok of Stewart's, Barry's Bay, and also refilled one in Horse Shoe Gully. We put in one day on the Summit refilling culverts, and also repaired some cattle stops. Since then we have been working taking off the point at back of Barry's Bay school, whiob is nearly finished. The next work on hand will be to go through from end to end and clean out culverts and outlets ready for grading if tbe team is available.

Mr Williams said the water cban nels-on the road to Akaroa required cleaning out, as tbe water was run ning all over the road. The olerk said Mr Bailey bad offered to work tbe grader on the Summit road if the Counoil wouia allow bim to employ a man to assist him.

Mr Hay moved the foreman be inetruoted to secure a team to work the grader, and attsnd to the culverts while grading the Main road, Tbe motion was seconded by Mr Williams and carried.

Mr Hay reported tbat after last meeting of the Counoil Messrs Tbacker Bros, and himself had inspected tbe bad bend at tbe bottom of the Barry's Bay bill, and bad instructed tbe foreman how to improve it. Tbe road had been considerably widenad and the bank had been taken down. He thought a splendid jjb had been made of it.

Mr Conway moved tbe action of tha three councillors be approved by the Council.

Seconded by Mr Williams and carried.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT. Receipts Bince last meeting, £651,

18* Id; dr balance. £1044 ia 8d; accounts presented, £212 12s 6d; o*nb in hand, £184 2a 4d ; total debit, £1122 14s sd.

Tbe report was adopted. Mr C Thacker gave notice of motion to move at next meeting "that the Akaroa County motor by law be amended to enable motors to travel on the County roads every Wednesday night eaoh week."

Mr Thacker said he thought that tbe time had come when motors should be allowed on tbe road at least one night a week. The by law was broken practically every night now, and motor oyoles and cars very fre quently travelled along tbe Summit road and Mam road. Tbe by-law was not enforced, and was practically useless as it stood He did not think there was any great danger with horses now, and if there was, tbe one night a week would educate tbem up to throwing the road open for night travelling altogether.

Tbe chairman and Messrs Hay and Conway expressed their willingness to support the notice of motion.
