BOUGHT BY MR. JOS ARMSTRONG.
The Auckland - French Red Gross Committee, sent down a beautiful French flag emblazored with the arms of the City of Paris to be auctioned at the concert/'-\; After ■ '-■. the, interval the Mayor, Mr G. Armstrong, put up the flag for auction. He exnlainthat he would as"k for bids,* and then later put up the flag for absolute sale. The amount raised in • preliminary bids totalled £58 18s, and "the flag % was bought finally b t y Mr Joseph Armstrong of Stoney Bay for £70. The following bids were received :Mr Alfred Rhodes, £5; Mr L: Brocherie, £5 ss; Mr & Mrs! H. ( Wilkins, £3; Mr J. S. Dodds, £3; Mr. W. J. Lane, £1 Is; Mr Youngman, £2 2s; Mr, J. R. Newton, £2; Mr T. E. Taylor £2 2s Mr W. H. Henning £1 Is; Mr C. W. Leete,£l Is; Mrs W. Glynan £1 Is; Mr G. W. Thomas, £1 Is; Miss Norah Lelievre, £1 Is; Miss Lucy Kearney; £1 Is; Mrs E. E. Lelievre, £25; Mrs Buckland, £1 Is; Mr W. K. Virtue, £1 Is. The flag was then put up for final sale and was purchased by Mr Joseph Armstrong, Stoney Bay, at the sum of £70. CONCERT. The last part of the entertainment consisted of a concert arranged by Mr Edwin Clarke, of Christchurch, who gave several humorous items. The. other performers were Mesdames Jones, Clarke, Miss Ruby Clarke, Mr S. K. Mason, Mr C. Hall. Miss Selby . acted as accompanist. THE MARSEILLAISE. y *
Before the flag was put up to auction the Marseillaise was sung by the Akaroa High School pupils Misses M. Julius, G. Youngman, L. Armstrong, E. Rhodes and Master Dodds and -Youngman. The singing of the Marseillaise also brought the entertainment to a close.
The following list shows how the total proceeds were made up. Sale of medals, £8 17s; sale of badg-es, £6 2s; tickets sold by scouts, £9 lis; door money, £14 Os 6d; sale of • flag, £128 18s. Total £167 8s 6d.
