Wβ received the following telepram from his Excellency Lord Liverpool, which speaks for itself:—

Government House, Wellingten, 11th October, 1915.

"I have received a telegram from the Marquis of Lanedowne, X G , informing me tbafe in view of the growing demand both in France and tbe Near East, it is necessary to make a general appeal for assistance in money for Bed Cross purposes, and be has therefore apked me whether this Dominion will assist in company with all the other dependencies of the Crown in organising street and other collections throughout New Zealand on October 21st, Tbe money received from this general appeal will be Aβ voted entirely to relieving our sick and wounded soldiers and sailors from Home and Overseas at tbe various seats of war.

Lord Lanadowne goes on to say : " From all parts of the King's Dominions we have already received generous assistance in our work, but with the increase of British and Over seaa forces at tbe front, there is a corresponding increase in our expenditure, and we shall be truly grateful to you if you will help us by organising an'appeal for the object which I have named. Their Majesties, the King and Queen, and her Majesty, Queen Alexandria, are giving us their gra cious patronage, and I trust that you will also be able to see your way to help us. I accordingly consulted my ministers on tbe question, and they concluded in tbe proposal to lay this telegram before the people of these islands. While gladly according tbe patronage and support apked for by Lord Lansdowne, I desire to make it clear that this appeal emanates from the United Kingdom. No goods in kind are called for- All contributions should be sent to the Under Secretary for Internal Affairs, Wellington, and I will then, according to the instruc tions, give directions for the amounts to be forwarded to St, John's Gate, London, while at the same time informing bis Majesty the King."
