MEETING OF LOCAL BODIES,
A conferences of representatives of local bodies was held at the Christchuroh Drainage Board's office on Wednesday to consider the matter of drainage in the ElUsmere country districts. Mr K. M. D. After some discussion, Mr Coop moved— "That the Drainage Board be asked to take over the lake drainage, and that the different counties take over drainage affairs in their districts. The chairman said he could not accept the motion, A speaker said that at present a great deal of country was being drained into Lake Ellesmere, bnt no provision was made for a permanent outlet from the lake. In reply to a question, the chairman said that what was desired from tbe meeting was an expression as to whether the countieß wanted the Drainage Aot amended allowing the different counties to undertake drainage work in their own distriotF, It was oontended, however, that the better plan would be for the one body to look after the drains.
Mr Tatterson moved—"That in the opinion of the conference, the Ellesmere Land Drainage Board take over tbe responsibilities as enjoined upon tbem by Act of Parliament." Mr J. Cunningham propoffl' |Q amendment— ;That the Aot be so i_M " d 'ha' the area under tht» jurisdiction < 11 Board should be tbe high water mark f % c lake and that' tbe Bonrd ebould clei _ |bs drains in that area add keep the outlet < pen."
