French artillery, of 500 guns, dealt a shattering blow to the German front lines on the north eastern side of Arras on Thursday The Germans abandoned the trenches before devastating fire, and retired to Blangy St Lasurent, where snipers have taken up positions at windows and on housetops The Allies are strongly entrenched in the outskirts.
