ROBBING THE GOVERNMENT.
Christchurch, November 5
Before Messrs C. H. Opie and J, Brunt, Js,P., at the Magistrate Court thig afternoon, Andrews Co* tello, who was represented by Mr J. A. Cassidy, appeared to answer six charges of having misappropriated various euroa of money; the property of the New Zealand Government.
Detective Regan gave evidence regarding the arrest of accused on October 19. Costelio bad made a statement, in which he admitted tak inrr the moneys mentioned in the six charges, together with . 122 other amounts, totalling £10,756 8s 3d. He also admitted" that the misappropriations had extended over eight years, and that the amountg specified in x lhe lists represented tbe last instalments of rents due, also that the cheques had been paid and the defalcations made out of cash.
Accused pleaded guilty, and was .committed to tbe Supreme Court for I sentence.
Bail was allowed as before.
