' A TRAGIC MISTAKE. •» GENERAL DE LA REV SHOT. Johannesburg, Sept. 16 Generals Beyers and De la Rey, while motoring near the town, did not heir a policeman's challenge, and General Dβ la Rey was sbot dead. Capetown, September 16. Generals De la Rey and Beyers were returning in the evening from General De la Ray's farm. The police were seeking a gang of desperadoes, who were using a similar motor car. The police previously killed a doctor and wounded his wife and sister under similar circumstances.
Three gangs have been operating in the Rand. They raided a bank last week and shot dead a maD who dis covered them. They dynamited a safe on Sunday, killed two police, and es caped on a motor cycle. Armed police organised a hunt, and surprised their hiding place. The bandits killed a detective and escaped with a woman and child firing upon resident*. The police have since hunted for thetn in on tors.
