SHORT TERM RESERVES

At the District Lands and Survey Office on Wednesday the leases of the three blocks of land, situated in the Pigeon Bay survey district, were offered for sale; The Commissioner of Crown Lands, Mr C. R. Pollen, conducted the sale,

The land was all in the neighbourhood of Lyttelton Harbour, one block befng situated near Godley Head, one at Adderley Head and one at Camp Bay, In the Camp Bay block the lessee will be required to keep fenced off a point within the reserve, on which are situated some graves.

The conditions of sale required the purchaser, on the fall of the hammer, to deposit an amount equal lo six months' rent at the rate offered, to gether with £1 Is, lease fee The two larger blocks were for a term of ten years and the small one for four ! years. The leases were for the terms stated, without right of renewal, and subject to resumption by twelve months' notice in the event of the land being required by the Crown. Tbe lessee could have no claim against the Crown for compensation, either on account of any improvements that might be placed on the land or on account of possible re sumption, or for any other cause; but on the expiration or sooner determination of the lease he could remove any fences or buildings erected by him on the land. The lessee had to destroy all rabbits on the land and prevent their increase or spread.

Bidding for the first block of 478 acres was keen, and soon rosefnm tie upset £164 Os to £205. at which price it was sold to Mr W. D. Hawson. Block 2 was started at £80 15s, and was knocked down to Mr A, R. Fleming for £181, The small Ctmp Bay reserve, 30 acres in extent, brought the upset price, £10.
