City Still At War

Oh our way home from overseas service, out ship touched at Adelaide and we planned the evening's programme. As the port area seemed small we headed for the city proper for our precious entertainment. And we found that (1) All dances end at 11 p.m.; (2) There's no transport after 11.30 p.m.; (3) There are no eating-houses open or pie-carts after midnight; (4) And no night clubs open later than that.— Here was a city of 600,000 really at war! We asked one of the local girls about how many people there were in Adelaide. She wasn't, sure, but she thought there were something over 6000. Since then we've made a habit of asking folk for the populations of their home towns. In Australia and New Zealand, very few seem to have even the slightest idea. The Americans do it better— many of them can tell you the number down to the last dog!
