Home and Mother
To keep the relatives of newly married, couples at bay and to prevent a temperamental return to mother too early in the matrimonial journey, a native tribe on the Fly River, Papua, has developed a most effective custom. No matter how near it may be, the bride is not permitted to visit her old home during her first year of marriage. An accidental meeting with her parents carries no penalty, but the topics and length of conversation are very limited. At the end of the year the bride enters her old home and assists her mother to sweep the floor This is the symbol of the renewal of fraternization.
