UH GARRET.
By I. F. Layton.
My fondest mem'ries linger' round The home scenes of my childhood: The farmhouse, nestling "raid the trees, The meadow, brook and wild wood; But most I yearn to see again That haunt of youthful pleasures—--1 hat family Pandora box Of superseded treasures — "Up garret." A iprnning-wheel of olden time, A high chair and a cradle. Did school books, worn by childish hands, And Grandma's parlour table; Old magazines galore are there. To hold in thrall a reader: Aromas, blent, pervade the air,
Of apples, herbs and cedar. Up garret. Sometimes my childish fancy heard A mystic diapason Of echoes from the dreamy rasf. And down the stairs I'd hasten, Until I'd bid my common sen-o Imaginings to banish, And hark to real, farmyard sounds. Then back again I'd vanish, Up garret. My home is now a "cozy flat. In closet room deficient; In giving valued things away I'm growing quite proficieni; But when they're in the junk-man's cart I scarce refrain from weepinjr And long: to feel the joy 'twould _rive To hold them in my keeping, Up garret.
