Teviot News.

(Own Correspondent). Heavy rain fell here on Friday and Saturday last, and the district has had a thorough soaking. There is a heavy coating of snow on the surrounding hills and frost is almost certain to follow, but it is not anticipated that much damage can be done except to potatoes.

The frosts that played so much havoc to fruit crops in surrounding districts were not felt here by growers, the factthat growth of timber and fruit is so far advanced possibly accounting for its escape. Advices to hand from Raes Junction and Beaumont report much destruction amongst all varieties of fruit, some growers reporting almost a total loss. Strawberry growers are the heaviest losers.

The members of the Loyal Roxburgh Lodge M.U.1.0.0.F., celebrated the 40th anniversary of their branch on the 21st by a dinner at tiie Commercial Hotel. 2s.G. Geo. Vernon presided, V.G. F. Laloli occupying the vice-chair, and a large number of the local brethern, ami several visiting brethern, sat down to the excellent repast provided. After the dinner several toasts were honored and Y.G.'s Laloli and Mitchell were presented with emblematical certificates. The proceedings were enlivened with several musical items and the singing of Auld Lang Syne brought a very enjoyable evening to a close. The end of the golf season was marked by a social among members and friends on Thursday last. Progressive euchre was indulged in for a couple of hours, and after supper the floor was cleared for dancing which was kept up till the small hours. The gathering was most enjoyable. Unfortunately the weather was anything but conducive to a large attendance, but despite this fact some fifty people attended, and had a good night's enjoyment.

The adjourned meeting of ratepayers to consider the proposal of the Borough Council to take a poll to borrow £IOOO for the water and lighting scheme was held in the Council Chambers on Friday last. The Mayor (Dr Gilmour) presided, and twenty-one ratepayers were present. The various parts of the scheme were submitted and explained and after much discussion a motion to take a poli was carried by 15 votes to 6. The poll will be taken early next month. In the event of a successful poll the council intend to augment the present water supply by bringing in a right, recently acquired, from an adjoining creek, and laying a line of pipes of large capacity from the present intake down to the main road, where it will join the mains. The additional water will be used in generating current for street lighting and householders will have the option of installing electricity in their residences.
