To-day is the 181st anniversary of Captain Cook's birth. Captain Cook sighted the first land in New Zealand on October 6th, 176'J, and on the Bth of that month cast anchor in Poverty Bay. After having coasted round the North Island and the South and Stewart Islands—which last he mistook for part of the South Island —he took his departure from Cape Farewell on the 3l:>: March, 1770, for Australia.
