Borough Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening. Present: The Mayor, Crs Marsliu, Tohill, Ashworth, Spencer, Williams, Cameron, Ryan. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Outward correspondence was read and approved, and inward correspondence read and dealt witli as follows : The chief surveyor of the Land Department notified that one plan and two surveys wore required with any future road contracts. Mrs Dawson asked for reduction in rates owing to her house being unoccupied.—To be informed that the house must be unoccupied for six months before any rebate can be granted. The secretary of the Presbyterian Church Committee wrote asking that a ridge in front of the gate at the manse be levelled.—Left to works committee. From clerk of l-he Titapeka County Council inquiring amount of revenue received, from publicans' licenses.—Attended to. The Police Department applied for a half-inch service for the paddock.— Granted subject to the usual water rate being paid. A discussion here ensued on the rating of Government property within the borough. Cr Marsliu moved, Cr Williams seconded—That all Government buildings be charged a sanitary ami water rate. —Carried. From L. Churchill asking advice re the best method of draining his section. —To be advised to sink a deep hole in his property through the shingle. The borough dayman notified that water was running from Mrs Deady's property on to the. road.—The'clerk was instructed to notify Mrs Deady that she must not allow water to run on to the road. It was also decided to instruct the dayman that anyone interfering with the water would have their supply cut oil'. The Mayor reported that a break had occurred in the race through lissures in the rock, lie had procured about 60 feet of fiuming and this would be placed in position by the following day. Cr Spencer moved, Cr Marsliu seconded—That tenders be called for leasing one head of water delivered at the penstock. —-Carried. The following tenders were received and dealt with in connection with the yearly lease of the borough endowment: John Tohill, £5 5s (accepted) ; 11. Lewis (£3) and J. Cunningham (£2) declined. S. Cameron applied for an extra service for his sections.—Granted. The clerk was instructed to notify the dayman to stop the water on the section belonging to 11. Symes. Cr Marsliu, on behalf of the Caledonian Society, applied for a water service to the pavilion recently erected iu the Pec. —Granted. Cr Ashworth suggested that a resolution be passed viewing with favor the formation of a land league, which would i render valuable assistance to the town. The Mayor and Cr Spencer did not ' think it was a municipal matter. There ! was no laud within the borough that. ! came within the scope of the league, and whilst uo obstacle would be placed iu the way of the league its formation did not come within the business of the council. Cr Ashworth also suggested the ; erection of a suitable entrance into the : Pec, and favored cutting down the large tree iusidc the gate. Councillors generally were against cutting down the tree, which was the first tree planted in the llec. The financial position of the council did not i warrant expenditure on an entrance to the Pec. The financial position of the council on September 30th, 1909, showed a debit balance of £948 l(ss sd. Schedule of accounts amounting to £7O 18s 9d was passed for payment. The council then rose.
