Referring editorially to the result of the second ballot of the Kangitikei bye-election, a contemporary adds :—"lt may be said, in this respect, that the result of the second ballot at Tuapeka ia November remains the one serious blot to the discredit of the system." Volunteers were conspicuous by their absence, but the cadets marshalled in strong forces, whilst there was a good muster of bandsmen. The Rev. The trees recently planted in the Manu" herikia Domain are already bearing signs o' growth, whilst those planted a few years ago are thriving slowly.- Hitherto there has been a scarcity of water for the grounds, but encouraged by the promise of a permanent supply the members are infusing new life into the domain. Water is dow running around the newly-planted trees, and the pipeline laid up along the racecourse will be shifted and placed along the fence leading from the gate. When this work is completed there should be a plentiful supply of water for the trees, and within a short time the appearance of the domain should be more attractive than formerly. Toads, bats, and snakes can live longer without food than any other creatures. Htder Haggard is a very tjuick worker. He spent only six weeks iu writing " She." No merchandise can be landed iu Turkey bearing a trade mark resembling a crescent.
