The annual races of the Alexandra Jockey Club were held on Friday, December 22m1, on the Manuhcrikia Domain, and the meeting was subject to the most unfavorable weather experienced on race days in Alexandra for some considerable time. A cold southerly breeze sprang up about noon and intermittent showers, coupled with a hailstorm, were the order of the afternoon. Befoie the proceedings commenced a hurricane occurred and swept all before it. The large marquee erected as a booth was levelled to the ground, and the secretary's tent, was also blown down. Despite tho boisterous weather, there was a good attendance of the public, though, no doubt, the uninviting appearance in the morning had the effect of demimshing the number of visitors who usually come from distant parts of the district.

The officials had gone to a good deal of expense and trouble in improving the coarse and grounds, but the absence of a grand stand is sorely felt. A new picket fence had been erected in front of the stand, and this had the desired effect of keeping the public off the course. A new judge's box was also erected, and was a vast improvement. The racing on the whole was excellent, and several close and exciting finishes were witnessed during the day. The big trot provided an interesting race, as was generally expected, and the Manuheiikia Hack Handicap was also keenly contested. There was a considerable falling-off in the totaliaator investments compared with last year, only £7921 being put through, as against £1025 at last meeting. Theie were a multiplicity fielders and spielers of and no doubt thes& Ji -f ,^-! *' succeeded in defecting a Considerable amount of cosh from the. machitio; and the sooner steps are taken to prevent these gentry from bettingJon the course, tha better will Ly- it fa,,- for the club and tbe public. ™ The officials one an t all worked hard foi the success of the meeting, and the club's energetic and courteous secretary (Mr L. Ryan) carried out his duties in a capable and satisfactory manner. The president (Mr W. S. Laidlaw) acted as judge, and his decisions were never questioned. Mr J. W. Perriam, of Cromwell, acted as starter, and as usual despatched his fields in a masterly style. The meeting was free from protests of any kind, and it speaks volumes for owners, riders and all participating in the meeting that the events passed off go smoothily. Mr E. Murrell had charge of the totalisator, which was managed to the satisfaction of all concerned.

Mr F. Gorman, of the Caledonian hotel, Alexandra, had charge of the publican's booth, and was kept busy all day.

The sum of £32 17s was taken at the gate, as against £ last year. CROMWELL RACKS. TLe annua! wee meeting of the Oromwell Jockey Club was held on the Cromwell racecourse on December 26th and 27th, and proved the most successful meeting yet hed by the club. On the first day the weather was perfect, in consequence of which there was a large attendance of the public ; but on the second day a rather cold SJutherly breeze was blowing. Nevertheless, there was a goodly number of people present. The racing was, without a doubt, the keenest and most interesting ever witnessed at an up-country meeting, mostly all the finishes being fought out to the bitter end; and in several races the judge had difficulty in placing the horses. The sum of £2995 was put through the machine, as against £2095 last yeir; the action of the cub in checking the " booking fraternity" from laying odds accounting for the increase in the totalis.!tor investments. Too much praise caunot be given to the club's energetic secretary (Mr James Goodger), for to him alone is principally due the success of the meeting.
