National Savings National savings invested in Ashburton last week reached the fine total of £3054. The weekly quota is £731. University Results The subjects credited in the University of New Zealand examinations to Mias C. Licensing Committee Does Not Meet Through a complete absence of business requiring attention, the quarterly meeting of the Ashburton Licensing Committee, set down for noon to-day, was not held. The previous quarterly meeting did not eventuate for the same reason.

Sneak Thieves Operating Sneak thieves have made their reappearance in the vicinity of the bowling green in the Domain. On Saturday a member’s car was rifled, and 10 packets of cigarettes were stolen. On several occasions in the past members have suffered sjmilar losses.

Junior Red Cross - We are advised that the Junior Red Cross circle at Hinds School was formed in the war years, and has been functioning ever since. It is one of the most active in the county, working hard each year in a special effort to raise funds for the many worthy objects which they, in conjunction with other circles, support.

Children for Health Camp Four hoys from the Ashburton district, who have been at “Glenelg” Health Camp, will return home tomororw, and on Friday next four girls will go to Christchurch, and remain in camp till January 20. Advice has also been received that the next group following these will be in camp from February 2, to March 27, which is an indication that the terms of residence have been lengthened by a week.

Lodge Social There was a fairly good attendance of members and friends at. the R.A.0.8, social and dance, held in the Hampstead Hall on Saturday evening. Music for dancing was supplied by Bros. L. Chapman and S. Wilson, with extras by Bro. R. Chapman. Novelty dances were won by Bro. C. Wilson and Miss Wilson, and Mr Thomas and Miss Wilson. Bros. P. Miller and E. Fergusson were masters of ceremonies. • .

Band Sunday • ■, The Ashburton Silver Band took part yesterday in the annual Band Sunday promoted by the Canterbury Provincial Brass Bands’ Association. Twelve bands were on parade. Most of the selections played were massed items, the Ashburton conductor, Mr R. Milligan, taking his , turn with others in conducting them. In addition the Woolstdri Band played two selections and Ashburton gave a quickstep display. The attractiveness of the function, which was held before a large crowd at Lancaster Park, was enhanced by displays by girls’ marching teams and a parade of Air Force personnel. ... .

Theft of Milk Tokens Milk tokens and money were stolen from the bottles of a number of residents in Northland early yesterday morning, but full bottles of milk were left in the boxes as compensation. A full crate of milk was taken from a pile left on a street corner in Northland by the roundsman, and at several houses in the district the tokens were taken from the empty bottles, the bottles thrown away and full ones put in their place. The roundsman was naturally puzzled when, calling at houses he knew he had not been near, he found full bottles in their boxes. When lie returned to the pile of crates he had left on a corner he found the thieves had returned the empty crate. —P.A.
