NX SHORTAGE OF WHEAT • The Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants report another quiet week on the local market. Practically all lines of wheat have been cleared and North island merchants are suffering a temporary shortage of wheat for fowl-feeding purposes, owing to the hold-up in shipping from Australia. A demand has set in for heavy lines of Garton oats to alleviate the shortage in the feed position. Algerians and Duns are also in better demand and merchants are hopeful of quitting stocks before the new season’s grain is on the market. Oatsheaf chaff is still required in the North Island, hut lack of freight is regarding business. The market for lupins remains quiet and the first of the new season’s crop should be available by Christmas. The Marketing Department will be assessing the value of surplus potatoes next week. All markets remain quiet. | Range of Prices The range of prices is as follows, all on trucks at country stations, sacks extra unless otherwise stated: — Wheat —Tuscan, 9s 2d a bushel; Hunters, 9s sd; Velvet, 9s 6d; Marquis, 9s Bd, all f.o.b. (less £d a bushel Insurance); Hilgendorf, 10s Id. Oats —“A” Gartons 5s a bushel, “B” grade 4s 9d (nominal), Algerians 4s 9d to ss, undergrade 4s 6d, Duns 5s 6d to 6s, according to quality. Barley—Chevalier 6s 7d, Cape and research 6s 4d a bushel. Grass-seed —Mother perennial, £1 5s a bushel; certified permanent pasture, £1 4s; certified mother H, £1 ss; standard, £1; certified Italian mother, 255; standard, 22s 6d; uncertified, £l. Linseed—F.a.q 1 . £32 a ton, contract.
