SHOW TAKINGS
DECREASE THIS YEAR INCREASE IN PRIZE-MONEY “The unsettled weather probably meant a loss of about £IOO in the gate takings and in the sale of catalogues,” said the secretary (Mr W. H. Dalton) at a meeting of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday. Mr Dalton was referring to the fact that at the recent show, a decrease of £227 9s on the previous year’s figures, including a decrease of £25 18s in gate takings, resulted. He also pointed out that the principal reason for the decrease was an increase of £l4O in the prize money.
“Although the first impression is not so good, the extra prize money for special centennial trophies must be taken into consideration,” stated the president (Mr. D. S. Studholme). “After all, everyone had a good time, and that is the main thing.” Improvements to Pens Included in the correspondence received was a letter from the judge of the pig section at the recent show (Mr J. D. Galpin). “If improvements such as laying a concrete floor, were made to the pig pens at the show, I think you would receive bigger entries in this class,” stated Mr Galpin. The vice-president, Mr J. Davidson, said that some pigs dug into the ground after the exhibitors had. cleaned and- in some cases oiled them. “Although I agree with the suggestion, of the judge I would like to see adjustable ramps for' loading the pigs installed at tjie next show,” said Mr R. C. Cameron. This recommendation was carried and the judge’s comments were referred to the incoming committee.
The annual export lamb competition will be held at Fairfield on December 14. The 3<5-421b class will be discontinued.
Show trophies will be officially presented to successful exhibitors at a social to be held on December 7.
