FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 22, 1900), Reference Library—When the Borough Council is in a position to make some improvements in the Public Library, it is to be hoped that the importance of a good Reference Library to the town will not be overlooked. This matter is more than ever necessary since the Reference Library at the Ashburton Club has been practically closed to members, owing to a new rule making it necessary for those who wish to refer for information, to first find the manager and get his permission to do so.—Sheep Figures: Forty years ago the number of sheep in the provincial district of Canterbury was 20,000. Now it is 4,000,000.
