, CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY IN AUSTRALIA BRISBANE, June 21. The New Zealand and Canterbury champion (Miss Zoe Hudson) _ lished a new course record, with 79, to lead the big ’field of 84 in the first qualifying round for the Australian Ladies' Amateur Championship at the Royal Queensland Course to-day. Miss Hudson shot the only score below 80. Her card of 79, four over the standard scratch, included two birdies and a six. She went out in 40 ( which is four worse than scratch, but came home in the .regulation 39. ' “That will do me. If I can do anything like that to-morrow I will be very happy,” Miss Hudson said. Tomorrow will see the second qualifying round to decide the best IG, who next week will undertake four days’ match play to determine the winner. Miss Hudson, who now is a firm favourite, said she felt quite at home today in Queensland and in the out-of-season rain and wind which swept across the 5950 yards course. Miss R. C. Hodges (Auckland), who with 84 is in the eighth place with three others, had bad luck on the fastrunning greens, which she was unable to read correctly. 1 Her long game equalled the best ever seen on the course. Other leading scores are: Miss J. Abbott (N.S.W.) 80, Mrs K. Hauritz (Queensland), Miss H. Stockman (N.S.W.), Miss S:. Fisher (S.A.), Miss B. 'Kurnot (Victoria) 83;. Miss R. Rhodes (N.Z.) S 4. Other New Zealand scores are: Mrs H. A. Murray 88, Mrs G. W. Hollis 90, Miss W. Hughes 91, Mrs Jackson Ball 92, Miss C. Fleming 92.
