CYCLING
ASHBURTON CLUB
FIRM STAND TAKEN The inability of riders to appear at meetings and races staged by the Ashburton Amateur Athletic Club has resulted in the committee taking a firm stand to rectify the matter. One or two riders appear at every function, but several had little club spirit, and the committee decided that unless they made a more substantial contribution to the welfare and activity, of the club the only step would he for the club to go into recess.
For the first time for several years the club has not shown a financial deficit, and to encourage riders several trophies have been purchased. The number of riders in the club totals 14, and several former members have turned professional. Two stalwarts of the club, the Cague brothers, were recently welcomed back after a trip to Australia, while one of the young members, P. Connolly, was farewelled, in view of his departure to Christchurch.
A 21-mile road race from Ashburton to Methven will he held on March 18 if the Transport Department approves. In connection with this race four cups will be awarded, one donated by Mrs Cague for fastest time, one by Mr A. Morris for the winner, one. by Mr R: Williams (one of the riders) for second place and one for third presented by the* club. A 30-mile championship will be held later. Members of the club will compete in the annual Timaru-to-Christ-church and Ashburton-Christchureh races. The annual meeting will he now held in September.
