LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 10, 1900). Loyal Tinwald —Yesterday was a red letter day in the history of Tinwald, the great patriotic demonstration having taken place. The Ashburton Brass Band, under Mr George Hosken, headed the procession. The Rifles, under Captain Dolman, and with Lieutenants Hayes and Clarke, mustered 46 strong. The Guards, un-' der Captain' Span*ow and Lieutenant Cuthbertson, numbered 32. A team of eight members of the Ashburton Fire Brigade under Captain Fooks rode on the manual engine, drawn by four horses driven by Mr G. Scott. Miss B. Butler drove over from Peel Forest with an exceedingly pretty team of five ponies, one of the most admired units of the procession. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 10, 1925). * • No Meetings Held —No meeting has been held by the Ashburton branch of the Farmers’ Union for.over a year. .This was pointed out by the president of the Mid-Canterbury executive (Mr John Brown). He said it was not fair to ask Ashburton members to pay subscriptions to a branch which did not hold meetings. He thought it best that members join branches of. the union in their own districts, or near them. This suggestion was favourably received. Salmon Fishing: Three quinnat salmon have been caught in the Rakaia River this week. On Wednesday a 14-pounder was landed, and last evening two lighter ones of 81b' and 51b respectively were obtained.
