TWO MINISTERS DEFEATED

On the preliminary count, two seats —-Waimarino and Otaki—are at present held by majorities that might be upset when postal, absentee, and declaration votes are counted. Mr P. Kealrins holds Waimarino for Labour by 136 votes and Mr J. J. Maher, the sitting National member for Otaki, has a lead of 246. Both these are considerably bigger than some of the very close margins of fhe 1946 poll and the two seats htay well stay with the apparent holders. The final count, which will be known in a few days, cannot possibly give the National Party a majority smaller than 11. Independents and Communists generally polled badly." The Natonal Patty won a decisive victory at the General .Election yesterday. On the preliminary figures the National Party, led by Mr S. G. Holland, seems likely to have a majority of 12 in the new Parliament—46 seats to 34. Labour lost Oamaru and Hastings, both held by Ministers, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer (Oamaru) and the Hon. E. L. Cullen (Hastings). It also lost Otahuhu, Raglan, North Shore, Tamaki, Palmerston North and Roskill, all of which were National Party gains, some of them by substantial majorities. Marginal seats which the Labour Party hoped to win from the National Party followed the general trend of the election and selected National candidates.; Christchurch had two examples, Setwyn and St. Albans. Both were easily held by the sitting candidates, Mr J. K. McAlpine, in Selwyn, and Mr J. T. Watts in St. Albans. Throughout both islands, Labour suffered heavy losses in majorities in the seats it did retain. By 9.30 p.m. the result was beyottd doubt, although there was still much conjecture about the size of the National Party’s majority. In a national broadcast, shortly after 11 p.m., Mr Fraser willingly conceded the National Party’s victory.
