WOMEN’S DIVISION
ASHBURTON BRANCH MEETS The 20th birthday of the Ashburton branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers was held recently in the Foresters’ Hall. Mrs A. S. Hayman (president) presided over a very large attendance. The beautiful birthday cake was cut by Mrs M. C. Milne (provincial president)' who gave greetings from the Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive. Greetings were received from Mrs G. Moore, housekeeper secretary, and Anama, Ruapuna, Lismore, Wes ter field, Winchmore, Seafield, Flemington, Mitcham, Rokeby and Rakaia branches. Mrs Skinner, an ex-president of the Dunedin branch of W.D.F.F., also brought greetings, which were reciprocated. Mrs Ilayman welcomed all visitors. Mrs H. Brown, Mrs JI. Tait and Mrs A. Amos, foundation members, were present. Mrs Anderson, on behalf of the Alienton Women’s Institute, conveyed good wishes for the incoming year. Mrs Zeigler, of Christchurch, gave an artistic and educational demonstration of hand-made pottery. Many finished specimens were on view. Afternoon tea was provided under the supervision of the assistant-secretary, Mrs N. Macintosh.
Mrs M. C. Milne presented the competition prizes won during the year. Mrs Dayman was the successful competitor for the Begg Silver Cup and Mrs H. Watson received the prize for most points outside the cup competition/ Mrs J. Ellis received the reward for the most improved competitor, given by the judge, Mrs W. A. Johnstone.
Competitions resulted: Large bloom, Mrs H. Harper 1, Mrs E. Dayman 2; small bloom, Mrs E. Dayman 1, Mrs H. Harper 2, Mrs Millar 3; shrub, Mrs E. Dayman 1, Mrs Millar 2; cluster, ! Mrs Millar 1, Mrs E. Dayman 2; truss, Mrs E. Dayman 1; violets, Mrs E. Dayman 1; miniature jug of flowers, Mrs E. Dayman 1, Mrs Millar 2; best kept potato, Mrs E. Hayman 1.
FLEMINGTON BRANCH Mrs K. Taylor (president) presided over a very good attendance at the August meeting of tho Flemington W.D.F.F. Invitations to attend the Ashburton W.D.F.F. and the Ashton-Waterton Women’s Institute birthday parties were received. Members reported on tho Ashburton function, and four members were chosen to attend the Ashton-Waierton funetioi).
The roll call, ‘‘hospital box” and “plant exchange” was. well supported.
Arrangements were made for the forthcoming euchre party in the school. A proposal to sponsor a pottery demonstration in conjunction with surrounding district organisations in the Willowby Hall was enthusiastically received.
It was decided to support the Corso appeal, members io bring to the next meeting agricultural journals, seeds, books, etc. The feature of the afternoon was the comprehensive report on the recent conference in Wellington, given by Mrs K. Taylor who. on Mrs T. Sutherland’s proposal, was accorded a vote of 1 hanks. The monthly competitions resulted: Hand-worked throwover. Miss J. Bratley 1, Mrs Sutherland 2, Mrs T. Williams and Mrs W. Quaid (equal) 3; decorated saucer. Miss J. Bratlev 1. Miss ,!. Bryant 2, Mrs L. Dell 3: jar of marmalade, Mrs K. Taylor 1, Mrs T. Sutherland 2. Miss J. Bryant 3; Belgian biscuits for Malvern, Mrs G. Blee 1, Mrs T. Bell 2. Miss J. Bryant 3; best flower. Miss J. Bratlev 1. Mrs K. Taylor 2. Mrs J. Omelvena 3. The hostesses were Mesdames T. and 1!. Bead.
