Two Centuries Scored
Highlight of the Ashburton Cricket Association’s club competition fixtures on Saturday was the prolific scoring on the Fairfield wicket, where Fairfield played Old Boys. Two batsmen scored centuries, D. Smith, Fairfield’s opener, reaching 106 not out, and Old Boys’ opener, I. M. Hamilton, 138.
Hamilton’s tally included 18 .fours? and Smith hit 11 fours. C. Price contributed 74 runs to Fairfield’s total, and I. Gosnell scored 87 not out for Old Boys.
Only five runs separated the first innings totals of the teams in the other senior game, Technical Old Boys v. Kia Ora.
Technical Old Boys v. Kia Ora
Technical Old Boys gained a narrow win by five runs on the first innings over Kia Ora, when the County Cricket Sub-Association’s senior competitions were continued on Saturdaj'. Technical took first strike and made 125 runs, R. Sheehan making the top score of 65, almost half of which were made in fours. The only other batsman to reach double figures was N. Nottle, who scored 26. Bowling for Kia Ora, H. Jordan gave an outstanding performance to take eight wickets for 29 runs. A. Cade took two wickets for 36 runs. In reply to Technical’s 125, Kia Ora made 120. H. Jordan made 35 before being bowled by Nottle, and R. Holloway made 24, B. Jordan 14, and S. McElhinney made 13. All the Technical bowlers had successes, R. Moylan taking three for 17, N. Nottle three for 29, C. Keen two for 32 and M. Wall two for 34.
Old Boys v. Fairfield
A declaration by Fairfield with six wickets down for 227 runs gave Old Boys thd opportunity to gain' a first innings win. Fairfield batted first, and lost its first wicket with the score at 12. This early success for Old Boys however did not shake the confidence of D. Smith, the other opening batsman, and his new partner, C. Price, for these two settled down and took heavy toll of the bowling. The partnership produced-121 runs, and ended when Price was given out lbw to Harper, with' his score at 74 and the total at 133. Punishing loose bowling and running many sharp singles, Smith carried on to score 106 not out. C. Robertson contributed a useful 19 to Fairfield’s total. The only successful bowler for Old Boys was J. Harper, who took five wickets for 73 runs. Facing a difficult task, the Old Boys’ opening batsmen, *l. M. Hamilton and I. Gosnell set briskly about the Fairfield bowling, to such good effect that 208 runs had been scored before they were separated.'Williamson broke the partnership when he caught and bowled Hamilton. Hamilton’s score was 138. At stumps Gosnell had scored 87 not out, and the Old Boys’ total stood at 247 for the loss of four wickets, giving them a first innings win by 20 runs.
JUNIOR GRADE SCORES Poor batting was evident in the junior grade match between High School and High School Old Boys, few players reaching double figures. Old Boys won by 34 runs on the first innings. High School batted first and totalled 47 (B. Champness 21, R. Preston 16; B. B. Hart took four wickets for 4 runs, M. Cowan two for 3, and D. Brown three for i l9). Old Boys replied with 81, R. Carter (34) and W. Ockenden (25) being the chief contributors. Bowling for School, D. Frew took six for 39. School did little better in their second strike to total 56, D. Frew top-scoring with 14. D. Brown captured five wickets for 12. When stumps were drawn, Old Boys in their second innings had lost four wickets for 22 runs, Champness dismissing three batsmen for 13. Scoring 148 in the first .innings, Tekau beat Lauristori by 61 runs oir the first innings. Tekau batted first, its
best scorers being G,. Jordan (40), D. O’Grady (21); J. O’Grady (14), A. Hansen (24), W. Ferris (12), and and M. Bain 17' not out. For Lauriston, W. Goodwin took five wickets for 29 runs, and C. Ashworth took three for 16. In reply, Lauriston made 87 runs, J. Mounsey scoring 24 and R. Hooper 18. Bowling for Tekau, D. O’Grady took four for 20, A. Sparrow two for 17, and A. Hansen two for 23. Tekau declared
its second innings closed after 63 runs had been added for the loss of three wickets, G. Jordan scoring 23 not out, and A. Hansen 26 not out. At the close of play Lauriston had scored 31 for the loss of three wickets in its second innings. . , Technical Old Boys beat Technical
School outright by 10 wickets. Batting first, School made 35 (Lord 10; L. Cornwall six for 11, Ibell two for 7). Old Boys replied with 96 (P. Roulston 31, K. Moses 10, B. Sutherland 24 not out; G. McCormick seven for 38, S.
Carswell two for 36). In its second innings, School made 70, Carswell scoring 23. For Old Boys Roulston took four for 36 and Sutherland four for 18, Old Boys had made 14 without loss at the end of play. No batsman reached double figures
in Lane, Walker, Rudkin’s first innings against Methven, and the team was all out for 33 runs. For Methven, S. Buftoxi took four wickets for 19 runs, and H. Hampson took four for _ 13. Methven made 95 in the first innings
(J. Hooper 39, Bufton 13'; D. Brown four for 25, A. Thomas three for 29). Lane, Walker, Rudkin gave a better
performance in the second innings, scoring 109 (N. Gourdie 26, F. Crawford 25, Thomas 14, J. Gourdie 12), Hampson took seven for 29 and Bufton two for 32. The Methven openingbatsmen had put on 55 without loss at stumps (Hooper 23 not out, E. Newman 25 not out). ,
