STATE LOTTERIES EARN MILLIONS
(By Air Mail) SYDNEY’. Two Australian State lotteries have made record profits during 1945. The New South Wales State Lotteries reported a net profit of £A2,000,000 and the Queensland Golden Casket Art Union netted £A850,000. Profits from these State lotteries are allocated to hospitals throughout the two States, child welfare associations, charitable organisations and medical and dental schools.
The Queensland Golden Casket Art Union was started by a citizens’ committee in 1918 to raise funds for patriotic purposes. It did not appeal to the public for some time and the first casket took six months to fill. After 1921 the State Government took over the casket organisation and since then more than £9,000,000 has been distributed from profits of the Golden Casket The New South Wales State Lotteries were initiated by the Government.
Reports of the profits by the New South Wales and Queensland bodies has caused renewed agitation in Victoria for the establishment of a State lottery. Successive Governments have refused to introduce a lottery in Victoria. —Reuter.
