STRONG WINDS

228 KNOTS AT 30,000 FEET (P.A.) ■ AUCKLAND, August 277. A wind of 228 knots, at a height of 30,000 ft, was recorded by radar instruments over Auckland last night—the highest wind velocity ever recorded there. On the previous night the wind reached 210 knots ■ at the same altitude. Normal wind speed at that height is between 50 and 60 knots. Meteorologists said to-day that these high winds were- caused by a strong pressure gradient brought about by low pressures to the south, resulting in -strong westerly winds at high altitudes.

No aircraft has flown at such a height over New Zealand. Lockheed Constellations which visited the Dominion normally cruised at about 20,000 feet where, although very strong at times, the winds never reached such a velocity.
