BRITISH PETROL RATION
EARLY RESTORATION EXPECTED
(Special Correspondent—N.Z.P.A ). LONDON, April 1. After months of public protests and pleas and Government refusals it is now' believed that private motorists in Britain are to have their petrol ration again. The Minister of Fuel (Mr Hugh Gaitskell) is expected to make the an nouncement next Wednesday, on the day after the Budget, when it is. felt that the country may be grateful for some cheerful news The Cabinet s decision to provide a petrol ration is reported to have been taken after it had received the recommendations of the Russell Vick Committee on the black market in petrol. There are several speculations about when the ration will be made available and how much each motorist' will receive. Guesses are that the date will be May 1 or June 1, and that provision will be made for about 150 miles a month. The new' ration, it is stated, will be linked with. public co-opera tion to defeat the petrol black market. The Russell Vic report is expected to be published next week, probab’y at the same time as the Government, statement on the new ration.
