END OF EMPIRE

Sterling Area Plan FORECAST BY NEWSPAPER (N.Z.P. A.—Copyright). LONDON, March 22. “The end of the British Empire,” is forecast by the “Daily Express” if a plan—said to be under consideration by the Washington State Department —for America to take over Britain’s economic responsibilities in Australia, New Zealand, India and Egypt goes through.

The “Daily Express’’ referred to a statement by the “New York Times” that, in return for Marshall aid, pressure will be brought to bear on Britain to give up being banker for the Empire and other sterling area countries. The newspaper declared that Mr Att lee and some of his colleagues, ny their lack of faith and judgment, had so sorely damaged the sterling area that South Africa was moving in the direction of a separate monetary system, “and that will be the beginning of the utter disintegration of the sterling area for the whole lot of us.”
