Mr mason addresses MEETING

The Ashburton Junior Chamber of .Commerce Inst evening resolved to establish a blood bank. The chamber lias the support of the Junior National Party, the Junior Labour League, the Ashburton and Mid-Canterbiuy Badminton Clubs and Hie Hampstead Old Boys’ Football Clubs. 'l’llo steps involved in the establishment of a blood bank were explained by Mr A. J . Mason, medical superintendent of the Ashburton Public Hospital, at a meeting of tbe chamber and representatives from the supporting organisations field last night. Mr Mason said that there had to be a number of suitable candidates to give blood. After outlining what made for the suitability of a person, he said that the loss of a pint of blood lmd little injurious effect on a. healthy person. Blood was of use up to 10 days from when it was drawn off, but after that period it had a further use by producing blood plasm, which coufd be kept for months. It had great use in cases such as shock. One or two donors coming forward each week would be ample for the requirements of Ashburton. In answer 1,6 a question, Mr Mason stated that there was no blood bank at Ashburton, but there was a list of voluntary ddnors. who were prepared to give blood. He was greatly indebted to the St. John Ambulance for the list of present, donors. Mr Mason concluded by saying that the junior ichamber could establish a blood bank, or have a list of accessible donors .who were'.prepared to give their olood at short notice.
